How to Make an Epoxy Resin Clock

What Is an Epoxy River Clock?

We first need to explain what is an epoxy river table. An epoxy river table is a piece of hybrid furniture, made out of wooden planks and epoxy resin in between. Often the blanks have natural edges, the containing Resin Epoxy between looks like a flowing river. Resin River Tables have become very popular since 2019. The idea and the trend of the so-called Epoxy River Tables come from the USA like so many others. In the last years, a real epoxy resin table fever has broken out all over the world. Because these tables are very modern but at the same time also extremely noble and high-quality. In addition, they are real eye-catchers and radiate an exotic beauty. An epoxy river clock is very similar to the table and we use the same method to build it.

Instructions Step by Step

Before we start, we need to put the scotch tape all over the inner wall of the round gift box to make sure that the epoxy resin won’t touch the paper box. Then, use a rotary tool to grind off the rotting part of the wood block. Take out the prepared mold and put the wooden blocks into it.

Now let's mix the epoxy resin A with B (The mixing ratio of the two resins is 3:1), and use a wooden stick to mix them well. Drop an appropriate amount of pigment into the resin, stir it, and slowly pour it into the mold. After the first layer of resin has dried, pour the second layer of resin. There will be fewer bubbles if you do this. Drop a few drops of pigment into the resin and use a stick to draw water patterns. After 48 hours, the resin is completely dry and it is ready to be demolded. (Please note that bubbles will slowly dissipate on their own as they sit.)

Sand resin surfaces and edge bumps with a cordless orbit sander. If you don’t have an orbit sander, several sandpapers will also do the work for a much longer time.

In the next step, we need to use a wood router to make a square hole in the think resin disc where you need to put clock movement. It can be a little difficult to cut the resin disc directly so that we can draw a hole the same size as the clock movement in an extra wood board first. Then, drill a hole in each of the four corners with a power drill and cut out this area with a wood router along the drawn line.

Use quick action clamps to hold the wood block and resin together with a layer of foam paper in between to prevent scratching. Use a wood router to cut a square hole the same size as the hole in the wood block. The depth of the hole is the same as the thickness of the clock movement. Use a portable blower to suck out the sawdust if you have a blower.

Drill a through hole in the middle with a power drill and the clock movement can then be installed in it. Wood wax oil can be used to polish the resin disk if you want your clock to look smoother. Install the battery, hour, minute and second hands, and finally add some decoration to the second hand.

Voila! The resin clock is now complete!
