A Guide to Circular Saw

What is A circular saw

Acircular saw is a utilitarian power tool and a useful addition to the toolkit of DIYers. Its most common function is to make cuts in a straight line on pieces of lumber. By knowing its parts, you can make it easier to use the circular saw.

  • Rear handle and switch trigger: While holding the handle to push the saw forward, squeeze the trigger to start the blade; release it to stop sawing.
  • Safety Lock Release Button: This safety feature prevents the saw from being turned on if the trigger is accidentally squeezed. Deactivate it with your thumb and simultaneously pull the trigger to start the motor.
  • Auxiliary handle: This secondary handle is for your other hand to help guide the saw along its cutting line.
  • Blade guard: A retractable guard covers the circular saw blade when it isn’t operating. When the saw is lined up and ready to cut, the guard is lifted using a tab on its side.
  • Shoe: Also called the base of the saw or base plate, this is the metal rectangle that rests on top of the material being cut.
  • Bevel Adjustment Knob(Bevel Angle Scale Lock): Loosen to adjust the angle between the shoe and the saw blade.
  • Cutting Depth Adjustment Lock: Loosen this knob to adjust and set the blade depth.
  • TPI: The blade's sharp teeth are measured in TPI, or teeth per inch. A higher TPI gives a smoother cut that requires less sanding. Blades with a lower TPI produce faster cuts that are good for rough work. Multi-purpose circular saw blades are available but specially designed varieties should be used when cutting materials like metal, cement fiber board, ceramic tile or plastic.

Circular Saw Safety Precautions

1.equip yourself with a pair of thick, rugged work gloves
2.wear safety glasses or goggles
3.grab ear muffs if you’re going to be sawing for a long period of time
4.strap on a dust mask or respirator to avoid inhaling sawdust if you have sensitive airways
5.wear snug-fitting clothing and tie back long hair to prevent them from getting caught in the moving saw blade

Install the blade

Installing the blade appears to be complicated but all you need to do is to use an allen wrench to loosen the locking hex bolt in the center of the blade.

Measure twice, cut once

Measure and mark your work material where you’ll be making your cuts. Place your material on a saw table or between two sawhorses.

Use cutting depth scale to set the blade to the desired cutting depth

Pull the shoe lever in between the two handles all the way down to disengage the baseplate and allow it to move freely. From there, place the baseplate against your material and raise or lower the blade until it stops at or just below the bottom of the material you’re cutting. Only set your blade 1⁄8 in (0.32 cm)-1⁄4 in (0.64 cm) below the bottom of your material. Setting it too deep will not only force it to work harder, but also leave more teeth exposed, which can be dangerous. Setting the saw blade to the correct depth will ensure cleaner cuts and reduce friction, which can wear down the teeth and leave imperfections in the surface of your material.

Adjust the bevel angle scale for beveled cuts

Twist the small knob on the right side of the saw counterclockwise to unlock the scale that sits around the blade. Slide the scale to one of the angle presets indicated on the frame, or stop it at any point along the way to make custom cuts. Once you’re satisfied with the angle, turn the clockwise to lock the scale in place. The degree can be set from 0° to 45° and users can simply cut by pushing the saw forward.
1. Make sure the locking knob is secure before you activate the saw. Otherwise, the scale may move when the blade makes contact with your material.
2. Changing the angle of the blade will allow you to make beveled cuts along squared edges or get just the right contouring on oddly-shaped pieces.

The laser beam can be very helpful when you are sawing

Activate the saw blade by pulling the trigger on the rear handle. Once you engage the trigger, the blade will begin spinning. Wait until it gets up to full speed to begin cutting. Hold off on pulling the trigger until you double-check your measurements, make sure the baseplate is properly aligned, and are prepared to begin cutting. Turning on the laser beam on the circular saw can make things much easier.

wait for the complete stop of blade after each cut

Once you've completed your cut, let go of the trigger and wait for the blade to come to a complete stop. To prevent potential mishaps, keep your finger off of the trigger while you review your work or line up your next cut. Never put your finger on the trigger unless you're preparing to make a cut. If you're not careful, you could activate the saw accidentally.

Unplug the saw when you're done using it

Take a moment to confirm that the blade guard is locked in the down position. Then, remove the plug from of the wall outlet, wrap the cord around the handle, and put the saw away until the next time you need it. Store your circular saw on a flat, stable surface on its side with the blade is facing away from any nearby objects. If you have small children at home, make sure your saw is locked up, out of reach, or otherwise inaccessible.
